From our own travels

Why we believe in this coverage — because we've lived it.

Every package we design comes from real experience. Here are a few stories from trips our own family has taken — and, where it mattered, what travel insurance actually did for us along the way.

Mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Rwanda · June 2015

Face to face with mountain gorillas

We trekked through dense bamboo forest in Volcanoes National Park, climbing for hours through thick vegetation before our guide held up a hand — and there they were. A silverback and his family, close enough to hear them breathing, completely unbothered by our presence. It's one of maybe a thousand mountain gorillas left on Earth, and we sat with them for a full, humbling hour. This is exactly the kind of bucket-list, once-in-a-lifetime experience we now help our clients plan — including the trekking permits, the right outfitter, and the insurance that makes a physically demanding trip into true wilderness feel a little less daunting.

Leopard in a tree during an African safari game drive
East Africa · June 2015

Leopards, chimps, and a guide who knew exactly where to look

Between the gorilla trek we also went chimpanzee tracking and spent days on game drives spotting leopards draped over tree branches, weaver birds building their nests, and penguins on a beach that doesn't look like it belongs on the same continent as a savanna. None of it would have come together without an experienced local guide who knew the terrain, the animal behavior, and exactly when to stop the vehicle and go quiet. It's the same reason our Destinations by David travel planning leans so heavily on a vetted network of guides — the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one is almost always the person leading it.

Group photo at the Uganda Equator sign during a 2015 East Africa trip
Uganda & Rwanda · June 2015

Straddling the equator, and a stop that stayed with us

Somewhere between wildlife stops we pulled over at the Uganda Equator line — one foot in each hemisphere, the kind of silly tourist photo everyone has to take. It's a small moment, but it captures what this whole trip was: constant motion between countries, ecosystems, and experiences, all of it made possible by a well-planned itinerary and a guide who knew the route.

Chimpanzee resting in the forest canopy during a chimpanzee tracking excursion
Uganda · June 2015

Chimpanzee tracking through the forest canopy

Before the gorillas, we spent a morning chimpanzee tracking — following the sound of hooting and rustling branches deep into the forest until we found a troop moving through the canopy overhead. They're faster and more unpredictable than gorillas, which makes the tracking itself half the adventure. It's a fantastic warm-up for a gorilla trek and a wonderful experience in its own right, and it's the kind of multi-day, multi-experience itinerary we love building for clients who want real immersion, not just a checklist.

Local guide demonstrating traditional basket weaving with papyrus reeds
Uganda · June 2015

Learning from the people who know the land best

Some of our favorite moments weren't with wildlife at all — they were with our guides, who took the time to show us how traditional baskets are woven from papyrus reeds harvested right along the wetlands we were walking through. It's a small thing, but it's exactly why we built our guide and porter network the way we did: the right local guide doesn't just keep you safe and on schedule, they hand you a richer, more human version of the place you're visiting.

Class 5 whitewater rafting on the Nile River near Jinja, Uganda, raft launching off a rapid
Jinja, Uganda · June 2015

Class 5 rapids on the Nile, and a genuinely airborne raft

Not every part of this trip was quiet wildlife viewing. Near the source of the Nile, we spent a full day running Class 5 whitewater with Nile River Explorers — the highest commercially raftable grade, complete with a moment where the entire raft launched off a rapid and went briefly airborne with everyone still inside. It's adrenaline travel at its best, and a great reminder that the trips we help plan aren't always slow and reflective. Sometimes the best travel insurance question isn't "what if I get sick" — it's "what if my raft becomes a small boat-shaped projectile," and yes, we make sure that's covered too.

A reflection · Kigali, Rwanda · June 2015

A nation that chose to remember, and to rebuild.

One of the most important stops on this trip was the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It's a solemn and humbling place — a museum that honors the memory of those who lost their lives in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, and one that also broadens its scope to other genocides around the world, treating remembrance as something universal rather than singular. Walking through it is not easy. But it is one of the most informative, moving, and frankly transformative experiences we've had while traveling, and it left a lasting impression that has stayed with us long after the trip ended.

What struck us just as much as the memorial itself was Rwanda today. This is a country that has, in just over two decades, rebuilt itself into one of the safest, cleanest, and most welcoming nations we've traveled to anywhere in the world. Kigali is calm, organized, and genuinely warm toward visitors. Rwanda hasn't hidden from its history — it has built a museum to honor it — but it also hasn't let that history define its present. That combination, grief held alongside genuine national renewal, is something every traveler should witness for themselves.

🏨
Photo of Hôtel des Mille Collines coming soon

Where we stayed: Hôtel des Mille Collines

Many people know this hotel by its nickname — "Hotel Rwanda" — for the role it played sheltering refugees during the genocide. Today, you would never guess that history just from staying there. It's considered one of the finest hotels in the East African region: an excellent on-site chef and restaurant, a beautiful pool, and a handful of genuinely wonderful restaurants within easy walking distance if you want to explore. If you'd rather not walk, the hotel keeps a Mercedes and driver on hand to take you anywhere you need to go.

Staying there after visiting the memorial felt like the right way to experience Kigali fully — the history, honored and remembered, alongside the present, warm and thriving. It's exactly the kind of layered, meaningful stop we build into itineraries for clients who want their travel to be more than just beautiful scenery.
